Rose and MaloneyTelevision guest star appearance (UK) Series summary: Rose and Maloney are caseworkers with the Criminal Justice Review Agency, an organization that investigates possible miscarriages of justice. Role: David Terry
Summary of Anthony Head's storyline: Rose Linden and her partner Maloney work for the Criminal Justice Review Agency, an organization that investigates potential miscarriages of justice. They have been brought in to look into the case of Annie Sorensen Johnson, a famous socialite best known for her championing of social causes. Annie was convicted of murdering Helen Terry and her teenage daughter Daniella by creating a gas leak in the house while they slept. (NOTE: Daniella was played by Tony's daughter Daisy Head - although they had no scenes together.) Annie claims that she and Helen's husband, Dr. David Terry were lovers. She was convicted mainly because of the fact that she was seen at the Terry house the night of the murders. She claims she was there to talk to David after he wrote her a letter breaking off their relationship. David, meanwhile, has consistently denied that he and Annie were lovers and that she was actually stalking him. Rose and Maloney are asked to look into the case after Annie has attempted to commit suicide while in prison. They start by visiting Annie in prison. She insists on maintaining her story that she and David Terry were lovers and that she was at the hose that night only to see him. She claims that she destroyed the letter he had written to her breaking off the relationship. Rose doesn't believe Annie's story and is convinced of her guilt. Maloney is more willing to consider the possibility of her innocence. They next visit the scene of the crime where they met up with Detective Robben, who was the lead investigator on the case. He tells them that the first suspect in the case was a man called Duke Rothermere who had a history of starting similar gas leaks in the homes of people he had a grudge against. But no one was ever home in those instances. More importantly, Duke was in prison at the time the Terrys were killed. Once it was determined that Annie was at the home that night, she quickly became the lead suspect and was arrested about two weeks later. He tells them (via flashback) that David Terry was surprised to hear that Annie was at the house and had no idea why. Rose and Maloney pay a visit to David Terry at his office. David is upset at being asked to revisit the murders but Maloney tells him they are making sure that there has not been a miscarriage of justice. David makes it clear he is convinced of Annie's guilt because she was at the scene and she was obsessed with him. He says that he didn't know Annie, but they only met once at a party. His flashback memory of the meeting is of her approaching him to offer an introduction. His wife was not in attendance because she did not enjoy the social scene but he used to attend a lot of high profile functions back then. He still has a lot of celebrity patients but he has always done pro bono work, including visiting prisons. When asked, David denies that he and Annie were lovers or that he ever wrote her a letter. He states that his wife was a beautiful woman, and his daughter would have been one too. At this point, we see that he keeps a collage of pictures of his daughter above his desk. Although Rose offers her condolences, Maloney pushes Annie's claims by quoting her statement that she loved David "like a riot in her heart and soul" and she asked for David's help in clearing her name. David responds by calling her a damaged person and says that he pities her. But she killed his family and the thought that it was done out of love is unendurable to him. Maloney points out that Annie has never admitted her guilt and there is nothing to actually place her inside the house (she was seen outside only). David says that there was a phone call that never made it into court. His wife called his cell phone that night and left a voicemail asking him to come home and remove Annie from their house. Meanwhile, Annie's father, Ronnie Johnson, has been following the investigation closely as he is afraid his daughter will die in prison. He tells Rose that Annie's mother committed suicide in front of Annie, but Annie never talks of this with anyone, and it was hushed up in the press. When he hears that David is still denying a relationship with Annie, he takes matters into his own hands. When David gets into his car in a parking garage, Ronnie jumps into the passenger seat. He demands that David start telling the truth and informs him that Annie has cut her wrists. When Ronnie refuses to get out of the car, David picks up his phone to call the police. Ronnie grabs David and smashes his face into the steering wheel several times. Ronnie tells David he wants his daughter back. David responds by asking what about his daughter? Who will give him her back? He goes on to tell Ronnie that Annie is deranged and she should be locked away forever for what she did. Ronnie finally gets out of the car. But instead of leaving, he gets in his own car and rams it into the back of David's several times, injuring David even further. Rose goes to visit Annie again. She asks how David and Annie met and, in Annie's flashback, it is David who approaches her at the party. She says they met again two days later and became lovers. When Rose asks her about the phone call Helen Terry made to David the night she dies, Annie admits that she was inside the house that night. She claims that she went there to tell Helen that she had her husband back. In a flashback, Daniella is excited to meet the famous woman and asks for her autograph. Helen meanwhile quickly realizes that this woman and her husband have been lovers. That's when she places the call to David demanding that he come home and remove 'this person' from her home. In the present, Annie continues to deny that she killed Helen and Daniella. Ronnie takes Rose to visit the former Terry nanny who creates a very different picture from the loving family image that David puts forth. She claims that David hit Helene and Helen was obsessed with creating an image of a happy marriage even though she and David were miserable together. Rose and Maloney pay David another visit. He claims that his bruised face and injured neck were caused by falling down the stairs. Maloney asks why Annie chose David to obsess over. David thinks that a child who saw her mother die and had an often absent father might obsess over what she saw as the perfect family. Maloney scoffs at the idea. Rose changes the subject by asking about David's work in London prisons. At Maloney's insistence, they have decided to look at Duke Rothermere as a suspect again. David remembers meeting Duke once when he had to declare Duke fit for an appearance before the governor. Duke spent the entire meeting complaining that he needed to be home with his sick mother. He had a litany of things that were wrong with him, all of which David ignored. David declared Duke fit and an upset Duke asked how David would like to suffer and have someone mess up his whole life. The guard asked David if he wanted to file a complaint against Duke for the threat but David decided to ignore it as empty. This occurred three or four years ago. In the present, Maloney tells David about Duke's history of turning on the gas in the homes of people he had a grudge against and they wonder if it's just a coincidence, especially since Duke was in prison when Helen and Daniella died. Rose asks if anything unusual happened in the hearing David fitted Duke to attend and he doesn't know. Rose and David go to see the former prison guard who had been present during the encounter with Duke. He recalls that Duke was up on charges for not returning on time after a home visit with his mother. In fact, he was out for 111 days before getting into a fight and returned to prison. The guard tells Rose and David that it happens a lot that records will show a prisoner still serving their sentence when they are out having absconded while on a home visit. Normally this will prevent a prisoner from being allowed future home visits, but since Duke's mother was dying, he was allowed to visit her. David begins to doubt Annie's guilt for the first time. Meanwhile, Maloney has gone over to Duke's home and discovers that Duke's mother dies just a few days before Helen and Daniella were killed. Duke is there but doesn't say anything at first. He shows Maloney copies of newspaper articles about the gas leak that he has all over the inside of a closet door. Duke finally starts talking and says he thought the house was empty. He'd just wanted David's help so he could look after his mum and David wouldn't do it. Rose and David arrive in time to see Duke being lead away peacefully. David and Duke stare at each other, but neither says a word. Inside the house, David looks at the newspaper articles for a moment and then asks Rose and Maloney about Annie. Maloney says he left a message for her father. David finally admits that he had lied and he and Annie were, indeed, lovers. Rose says she realized that when David referred to how Annie's mother died. That was not public knowledge and something Annie would have shared with a man she truly loved. David says that he was flattered that a beautiful, famous and young woman was interested in him and he didn't see the harm. However, he never loved Annie - it was just about the sex for him. But Annie imagined they were soul mates. David eventually grew bored and wrote to tell her that he was not going to jeopardize his marriage and family. Three days later his wife and daughter were dead. He admits he had told Annie he loved her, but he never really did. That's what he put in the letter that Annie would never show anyone, even though it may have proven her story. David asks to be left alone. |
