Summary of Anthony Head's storyline: During a party at a hospital, a man falls from the roof to his death. The Murder Investigation Team, which includes Eva Sharpe, Trevor Hands and Rosie MacManus, arrives to investigate and quickly determines that the victim, Karl, was pushed. Karl was a registrar at the hospital. Stewart Masters, a consulting surgeon at the hospital, arrives at the scene and is annoyed that the police will not allow him past the crime scene. The investigators start searching for Karl's girlfriend, Isabella, who has disappeared and her house has been trashed. A search of her house turns up several bottles of drugs, clearly taken from the hospital, and a medical file. Eva Sharpe attempts to get information about Isabella's medical history from Masters but he blows her off and refers her to Admin. Helen Cousins, a young doctor who works with Masters, gives Sharpe the information instead.

The medical file in Isabella's house turns out to be for a young woman who died five days after Stewart Masters performed an appendectomy on her. Parts of the file are missing and no post-mortem autopsy was performed at Masters' request, even though it is standard procedure to do one under the circumstances. They also discover that the records show that Masters was supposedly completing this surgery at almost the same time he was starting another operation in a different hospital across town. The Murder Investigation Team starts to suspect that Karl knew something went wrong with the surgery and was blackmailing Masters. They obtain a search warrant for Masters' home and he insists on going to the station to give a statement so he can get it over with. He claims that he thought highly of Karl, but the search of his home uncovered a draft of a less than positive assessment of Karl. They bring up the subject of the patient who died, but Masters initially denies even remembering her. After reviewing the file, Masters claims that she was deteriorating before the surgery and that contributed to her death. Hands informs Masters that they have uncovered evidence that she was healthy before the surgery. Masters angrily asks if Hands wants to debate medicine with him and Hands is more than willing to do so. Masters begins to realize that they have no real evidence against him and arrogantly informs them that he will file charges of harassment. Hands loses his cool and arrests Masters for Karl's murder, hoping that the 24 hours they can hold him will turn up more evidence. However, after only 12 hours have passed, Hands' superiors order him to release Masters because of the bad publicity the investigation is causing.

Sharpe and MacManus go looking for Masters at the hospital and find him in the room of Helen Cousins. He is yelling at her and shaking her, accusing her of destroying him. Sharpe and MacManus separate the two and Cousins flees with Sharpe following. MacManus questions Masters and he admits that he had Cousins finish the surgery so he could leave to perform the other surgery. Unfortunately, she was not fully qualified to do so. Hands arrives and once again accuses Masters of murder. Masters acknowledges that he showed poor judgment, but he is not a murderer. Meanwhile, Sharpe finds Cousins on the roof where Karl had died and it turns out that she is the one who pushed Karl to his death in order to protect her career and because she was in love with him but he wouldn't leave Isabella.
