The InvisiblesTelevision series regular (UK) Role: Maurice Riley
Episode 1 (May 1, 2008) BBC Press release: Warren Clarke, Anthony Head, Dean Lennox Kelly and Jenny Agutter star in William Ivory's new comedy drama series. Syd Woolsey and Maurice Riley are old friends who return from the good life on the Costa del Crime, where they have spent their ill-gotten gains, to a quiet Devon fishing village, planning to eke out their retirement fishing and availing themselves of the NHS. However, the quiet life is not for them and, with money running short, they quickly find themselves drawn back into a life of crime – only to find that crime has moved on and they've got new things to learn. In the opening episode, Maurice is determined to keep his promise to his wife, Barbara, and not return to crime, but Syd's son, Joe, is in trouble and the only way they can help bail him out is to rob again. With the help of Hedley, son of their old – now deceased – colleague Vernon, the boys try one last job. Or so they say... Warren Clarke plays Syd who – with four wives and three divorces under his belt – finds the single life hard. Anthony Head plays Maurice, Syd's rock – though that creates its own stresses for Maurice. Dean Lennox Kelly plays Hedley, 30-something-year-old son of the late Vernon Huthwaite, Syd and Maurice's former partner in crime. When Hedley hears Syd and Maurice are planning to settle locally, he wants in on the action. Jenny Agutter plays Barbara Riley, quite aware of her husband's penchant for cracking open the odd safe or two. Emily Head plays Grace Riley, who thinks her dad can do no wrong ... because she has no idea how he's made his money. Paul Barber plays Young Nick who, together with Maurice, Syd and Vernon, pulled off some of the most notorious robberies in the country's colourful history. Mina Answar plays Helen Huthwaite, Hedley's wife, who knows what he does but hates it, realising that Hedley is basically a decent bloke whose involvement in crime is largely due to his need to prove to himself he's worthy of his father, who was the great crook. Joe Tithe plays Syd's son, Joe, who is usually causing his dad immense trouble. Episode 2 (May 8, 2008) Digiguide description: Comedy drama series about the best robbers in town. Episode 3 (May 15, 2008): BBC Press Release: Maurice is rattled when Barbara befriends blue-blooded widower Peter Rackham, chairman of the golf club, as William Ivory's new comedy drama series continues. At the annual golf dinner and dance, Peter comments on Barbara's Aubrey bracelet and asks Maurice where he got it. Barbara tells a romantic anecdote, but Maurice falters. It becomes clear that Maurice stole the bracelet and Rackham's interest in it is disconcerting. As they are leaving the dance, Syd bumps into a waitress, Janet, who it turns out was his first love. Sparks fly and the couple reminisce about old times. Maurice berates Syd for his romantic optimism and says that their love isn't genuine. But Syd remains on cloud nine and it's not long before he and Janet are acting like love-sick teenagers. Maurice voices his concerns for the welfare of the gang to Hedley – when Syd is in love he goes off the rails, professionally. Barbara's bracelet is stolen and Maurice is quick to blame Rackham. Barbara refuses to believe it and they row, resulting in Maurice forbidding her from seeing Rackham again. Barbara is furious, and when he doesn't relent, she kicks him out of the flat. Maurice is convinced that if he gets the bracelet back, he'll get Barbara back, too. So, the gang breaks into Rackham's house in order to retrieve the bracelet. But things don't go according to plan... Episode 4 (May 22, 2008) BBC Press Release: Grace drops a bombshell on her parents when she tells them she's taking a year off university to go to New York with her boyfriend, Lee, and work as a burlesque dancer... or stripper, as her father, Maurice, calls it, as the action-packed comedy drama series by William Ivory continues. Maurice goes into protective father mode and endeavours to learn everything he can about the boyfriend before she goes, which involves breaking into his flat. However, he is stopped in his tracks by a spooked Grace, who whacks him round the head with a frying pan. When Grace later sees her dad with a cut head, and acting strangely under interrogation, her suspicions go into overdrive. Meanwhile, Maurice has other issues at hand. The famous safe-maker, Gerard Wilson, has died. The one safe that Maurice failed to crack was made by Gerard. Now, with Gerard out of the picture, Maurice is adamant that the gang will find the safe and crack it. Hedley and Syd, however, are less than keen – they believe the safe is cursed. But Maurice is the boss and what he says goes, so the boys go about hunting down the safe and planning the job. Grace, in her search for truth, confronts Syd and questions him about her father's past. Syd's nervous procrastination further fuels her suspicions. Barbara isn't much better under duress and finally Grace decides it's time to face her father head on. She steals Syd's notebook and follows them to the lock-up where the safe is being stored. There, she finds her dad, who she believed worked in a bank, about to crack a safe... Episode 5 (May 29, 2008) BBC Press Release: When Young Nick's dad, Old Nick, the war hero, is tricked into selling a valuable war medal, Maurice and Syd vow to get it back, as William Ivory's action-packed comedy drama series continues. The job runs according to plan until Hedley refuses to break down a door. Instead, he tries to open a window which sets off the alarm, forcing the boys to abort their mission. When Maurice berates Hedley for his mistake, Hedley admits there's a problem. Helen is pregnant. He's going to be a dad. And he doesn't want to be in the gang any more. So, he's out. Maurice and Syd try to talk Hedley round, but he's adamant. He loves the gang and thinks that if he remains in it he'll be a liability. He's thrilled about becoming a father, but worries that he has nothing to offer the child. Maurice tells Syd it's a temporary wobble and they must do all they can to get him back on track. Syd says they should respect his wishes and accuses Maurice of harbouring some guilt about the way he acted when Barbara was pregnant. When Hedley sees some hoodies breaking into a car outside the pub, he assumes that their father must be absent or in prison, and worries that his child will grow up to be just like that. Determined to make a difference in the world, he signs up for a charity boxing match to raise money for the local community. While training him, Maurice and Syd engineer a meeting with Old Nick, thus prompting Hedley to come back on board to help him – though he swears this will be the last time...
