Him & Usunaired television pilot (US) Series summary: Was intended to be a series revolving around an iconic gay rock star (Anthony Head) and his manager, Freddie (Kim Cattrall). The series was co-created and was to be produced by Elton John. Elton John also wrote and produced two songs which were recorded by Anthony Head as part of the pilot. However, ABC chose not to pick it up for a full series. Role: Maxx Flash Summary of Anthony Head's storyline: Freddie is having panic attacks and decides to go to see a doctor. While there, she take a call from Maxx who is upset that a Vanity Fair interview has been published and not only did he not make the cover, they refer to him as an "aging icon". Freddie thinks that "icon" is overstating it. Maxx doesn't find that funny and tells her he is very upset. He then holds out his phone and orders his hovering bodyguard, Pete, to tell her. Pete says "The boss is not happy". Freddie starts to tell Pete to tell Maxx that she is at the doctor's office, but Maxx is still on the line. He wants to know if the doctor is in Beverly Hills. When she confirms this, he tells her to stop by Cartier to pick up a limited edition watch called the Essential so he can wear it for his final concert. After getting off the phone with Maxx, Freddie's doctor realizes that she is Maxx Flash's manager and tells her he is a big fan and that he and his wife had their wedding dance to a Maxx Flash song. He can't believe that a legend like Maxx wants to stop touring. Freddie irritability brings the subject back to her health. The doctor tells her that she needs to relax more. Freddie assures him that Maxx's final concert is that weekend and after it is over, she will be able to retire. During the credits, there are brief glimpses of some of Maxx's album covers: Flashion, Maxx Flash, Back in a Flash and To the Maxx. Freddie returns to the Chateau Rex Hotel where they are staying before the final concert. Her assistant, Nina, tells her that Maxx is much happier since the cute male reporter from The Times showed up. Freddie admits the reporter was originally supposed to be a woman, but she asked for a "another flavor" after the Vanity Fair fiasco. She makes her way over to Maxx, who takes a break from flirting with the reporter to ask if Freddie got the watch. She tells him there is not one left in North America. He tells her to find out if there is one left in the world, saying it'll be a big deal for Cartier if he wears it for his final concert. He goes on to tell her he heard Oscar de la Renta is selling his place on an island where everyone has a place and he wants it. Freddie brushes him off saying she has to get ready for the concert. Maxx snippily reminds her that he is the one performing, not her. Freddie reminds Maxx that he never uses the eighty-thousand acre ranch he had to buy after seeing A River Runs Through It. Maxx mutters that he never got the hang of fly fishing. He then changes the subject to tell her that he doesn't want Jean Claude around for the concert. He can't remember why Jean Claude is even around. There's a flashback to Paris 12 days earlier. Maxx and Freddie are in a designer's display room where he is casually pointing out outfits and declaring, "I'll have one of those". His final "I'll have one of those" is directed at an assistant, Jean Claude. Maxx invites him to join the tour, declaring it will be the opportunity of a lifetime. Back in present day, Maxx tells Freddie to let Jean Claude down gently. Freddie can't believe he expects her to dumps his boyfriends for him, but ultimately capitulates. Freddie does the deed, sending Jean Claude off with a watch she took from Maxx's wardrobe, not realizing it was inscribed "Love, Merv". Afterward, she is in a tent set up on the hotel grounds, getting a massage. She opens her eyes and is shocked to see Maxx laying under the massage table looking at her. She demands privacy but Maxx complains she wasn't answering her phone. He just wants to know if he can expect to find "Frenchy" in the jacuzzi. Freddie complains she didn't expect to find an aging icon under her massage table but you can't always get what you want. This makes Maxx wonder if any of the Rolling Stones will be at the concert. He adds an inquiry if what'shisname, his father, will be there. Freddie says that's a maybe. Maxx is happily surprised until Freddie admits they actually haven't had any response from him at all. Maxx simply responds by asking how she's going to wear her hair tomorrow. Freddie is fed up and orders him out. He starts to leave declaring she's going to miss him. Freddie claims she dreams of missing him as she lays back down. Maxx asks about Jean Claude again and Freddie tells him Jean Claude is history. Maxx tells her not to forget the watch, claiming it's the one and only thing he's asked from her all day. A furious Freddie storms out of the tent after him, only to realize she has dropped her towel, to Maxx's amusement. The next morning, the various members of Maxx's entourage are having breakfast together: Freddie, Nina, the two bodyguards, Pete and Tim, and the valet, Sydney (who is planning to change his job title to factotum). They discuss how much they are going to miss each other, as well as the lifestyle. They are having a group photo taken as Maxx walks in. He wants a copy. He goes on to declare that he is in heaven to be free of Frenchy. Nina comments that when a relationship ends, you remember how nice it is to wake up alone. Maxx informs them he wasn't alone, he woke up with The Times. Tim is surprised Maxx slept with the reporter and Maxx assures him they didn't sleep. Maxx leaves, ordering breakfast in bed for two. That night, it's time for the concert, which is being held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. (A promotional poster gives the date as Saturday the 15th.) Backstage in the dressing room, Maxx and Freddie are talking to Ozzy Osbourne and Elton John. Ozzy wants to know why Maxx is retiring and Maxx says he wants to go out on top. Sydney claims that ship has sailed and Elton agrees, pointing out Maxx hasn't written anything new in years. They are discussing whether Maxx will do a reality show like Ozzy or Las Vegas like Elton, when Maxx notices Elton's watch. It is the same watch Maxx wanted. Elton tells Maxx it is the last one and it was a gift directly from Cartier. Tim informs Maxx that it's time to take the stage. While Maxx is getting the finishing touches to his clothes, he asks Freddie who else is there, specifically wanting to know about his father. He says that it's last chance for his dad to see him in concert. Freddie tells him that they taped off a seat in the front row. Ozzy calls out that he and Elton will be happy to join Maxx on stage. Maxx fakes a thank you. As soon as he and Freddie are out of earshot, he tells her to keep those presswhores off the stage. While Maxx and Freddie are walking to the stage, he reminds her of the time they first met when he and his first crap band were playing a pub in north London. He asks if she remembers what she wrote on a napkin. She hopes it wasn't her phone number. Maxx quotes: "You're the real deal. Never give up the dream. But do give up the fairy boots and the ponytail." Freddie laughs at the memory until Maxx pulls out the napkin itself and shows it to her. He sincerely thanks her for believing in him when no one else did. They have a tearful moment together before Freddie tells him to get out on stage. Maxx performs for the enthusiastic sold out crowd, clearly enjoying himself and the crowd's adoration. There is a brief moment when he realizes that his father is not there and the taped off seat is still empty. Maxx is quickly back into the mood however. During his final song, he jumps on top of a grand piano. He sees the words "Thanks for a great ride" up on the giant screen behind him. This is followed by "Never give up your dream". He turns back around to see the adoring audience. In the wings, Freddie sees the look on his face and realizes what is going through his head. Maxx informs the audience that, although this was meant to be his final concert, he has an announcement. Freddie panics and runs backstage, trying to unplug the sound system. Pete and Tim pull her off. Onstage, Maxx announces that the tour will go on, while backstage, Freddie collapses, crying that she can't do it anymore. After the concert is over, Freddie is on the balcony of a Staples Center restaurant, about to light a cigarette. Maxx comes up and takes it away reminding her she quit smoking. She in turn reminds him that he quit touring, but people change their minds. Maxx claims the fans love and need him but Freddie thinks Maxx needs the fans. He says they'll just add a few more cities and tells Freddie they'll go wherever she wants. Freddie tells him she can't do this anymore and reminds him she is having panic attacks. Maxx thinks she is having the panic attacks because she doesn't want this to end. He points out where they are and where they've been. Maxx is the longest relationship she's ever had. Maxx mentions that his father never showed, but Freddie always shows, as they both are addicts who need this. Freddie talks about the things she would like to do, including meeting people and talking about something other than Maxx. Maxx wonders why she would want that. Freddie tells him it's been a great ride and she wouldn't have missed it. But this is it for her. She needs to stay close to her doctor. Cut to Maxx sitting on his private jet. As the camera pans around to show that all the various members of his entourage there, we hear someone excitedly talking about being asked to join the tour. It is finally revealed to be Freddie's doctor. We see Freddie is also there while Maxx has a self-satisfied smile that he once again got his way. |
