Imagine Me and YouTheatrical movie Role: Ned
Summary of Anthony Head's storyline: It's the morning of Rachel's wedding to Hector (Heck). Her family is gathered to prepare: her father Ned, mother Tessa and 10-year-old sister H (which stands for either Henrietta or Jesus H Christ, which is what her mother said when she found out she was pregnant again). Tessa is nagging Ned about his choice of suits and he is ignoring her. Rachel assures him that he looks fine and then comes out to show off her wedding dress. The parental bickering stops - momentarily. Rachel and Ned head to the church in a limo along with one of the bridesmaids, Beth. Beth asks Ned how long he and Tessa have been married. He replies that it has been 30 years, adding that if he'd killed her the first time he thought of it, he'd be out of prison by now. He goes on to talk about how on his wedding day, he suddenly desperately wanted to call it off, but didn't. Despite this, Rachel continues on to the church without hesitation. However, while Ned is walking her down the aisle, she glances to the side and sees Luce, the woman who did the flowers for the wedding. Rachel continues on down the aisle, but that moment stays with her. At the reception, Ned and Tessa join in the dancing, although in Ned's case it's more like flailing about. Tessa doesn't hide her embarrassment at her husband's moves. Later, Ned tries to give a speech but the microphone slips and then Tessa grabs it away from him. Meanwhile, Rachel and Luce officially meet and hit it off. A friendship starts between the two women and they begin to realize their feelings are stronger than friendship. They try to ignore it at first as Rachel is married. But Rachel's marriage to Heck is becoming weaker and weaker. Rachel and Heck are at the Guy Hawke's fireworks display with Ned and Tessa. Heck tries to seek some martial advice from Ned while they are getting hot dogs, as he has become concerned about his marriage. But Ned cuts him off saying that they should never discuss Rachel because as soon as her name comes up, the only thought he has is, "That hound is putting it up my daughter." Rachel and Luce almost give into their feelings but end up deciding to stop seeing each other. Rachel confesses to Heck, without mentioning that the other person was a woman. But Heck, having quit his job earlier that day, is drunk and fakes being asleep through the whole confession. A few days later, it's Rachel's birthday and her whole family is gathered at her parent's house. When Rachel finds out that Luce is going away on holiday, Heck suddenly realizes, from her reaction, that Luce is the person his wife is in love with. Just as Ned is bringing in the birthday cake and singing Happy Birthday, Heck starts to leave. Rachel stops him and they argue around Ned who doesn't pay any attention to anything other than his singing, until Tessa finally snaps at him to shut up. Heck ends up leaving. Rachel tells her parents about her feelings for Luce. Ned finally drops the dithering fool routine and gives Rachel some sound advice. He admits that all the years he and Tessa have been married, he has never felt up to snuff. He believes that if Tessa ever met someone she truly loved, she would leave him without hesitation. Tessa clearly had no idea Ned believed this. Ned tells Rachel that if she truly loves Luce, she cannot let her go. Rachel realizes he is right. Ned and Tessa go with Rachel to Luce's flower shop, but she is already gone. Luce's mother is there and when she is sure that Rachel is serious, she tells her that Luce just left. They all set off in the Range Rover in pursuit. On the way, Tessa assures Ned that he has always been enough for her. He asks that she try to be a bit kinder and Tessa agrees. Of course, when Ned suggests a short cut and they end up stuck in a traffic jam, Tessa reverts and insults him. She does look apologetic for once though. Rachel calls Luce on her mobile and, although Luce hangs up on her, she realizes that Luce is in the same traffic jam they are. She jumps up on top of the car and yells for Luce. Once she has Luce's attention, she assures her she can do it. The two women run through the stopped cars for the big romantic reunion. Ned and Tessa have their own moment as well, sharing a passionate kiss, giving everyone a happy ending (Heck gets one as well, meeting a woman on a plane). |
