I'll Be ThereTheatrical movie Role: Sam Gervasi
Summary of Anthony Stewart Head's storyline: Paul Kerr is a fading rock star who drives his motorcycle out a second story window of his house during a drunken binge. He ends up being held in a psychiatric ward as a suicide risk. He tries to call his manager Sam Gervasi for help but Sam refuses to take his calls, telling his assistant to say he is in Japan. Meanwhile, Paul discovers that he has a 16 year old daughter, Olivia, the result of a one weekend stand. After sobering up with the help of a friend, Paul tries to establish a relationship with Olivia. Her mother, Rebecca, objects and, despite the fact that Olivia has a beautiful voice, does not want her involved in the musical business. She tells Paul that she wrote him to tell him she was pregnant but he ignored her. Paul insists he never got any letters. During one of Olivia’s visits to her father’s house, Sam arrives. He thinks she may be Paul’s latest girlfriend but is told her name and that she a distant relative. Sam tells Paul that with the recent publicity, it may be a good time to do another greatest hits release. Paul says he’ll think about it. While there, Sam sees a CD with Olivia’s name on it and slips it into his pocket. Paul also asks Sam what happens to fan mail that comes to him through Sam’s office and Sam says they send out an autographed picture but no one actually reads fan mail. Sam later listens to the CD he swiped from Paul’s and is blown away by how well Olivia sings. He calls her and says he would like to represent her. Later that night, Rebecca returns home to find a note from Olivia. She panics and goes to Paul’s house. They realize that Sam took the CD of Olivia singing and head to his office. They confront Sam and Paul ends up throwing Sam against the wall. Sam admits he offered Olivia a contract but she turned him down. She is at the Royal Academy of Music auditioning because she wants proper training before embarking on a musical career. Paul and Rebecca head there but not before Paul fires Sam for not reading fan mail in 1987. Sam still asks if Paul is interested in the greatest hits thing and Paul says he’ll think about it. |
